Marina Abramović (b. 1946) is a trailblazing conceptual and performance artist whose work explores body art, endurance, and the relationship between performer and audience. From her iconic work The Artist is Present where she sat in silence every day for three months, to Rhythm 0, a six-hour performance art piece in which she stood still and invited the audience to do to her whatever they wished, Abramović’s art has challenged conventional notions of what art can be and how it can engage with the human experience. Her work has also sparked much-needed conversations on topics such as gender identity, the role of women in art, and the power of the body as a medium of expression.
